This research partnership between Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo (Health Sciences), Prof. Monica Griffin (American Studies), Prof. Alison Scott (Health Sciences), and the Richmond/Henrico Health District of the Virginia Department of Health, focuses on the impact of community health workers. Community health workers (CHWs) link community members to social support and other resources to improve health outcomes. CHWs usually live within such communities or are members of the same social and ethnic group and thereby understand the social and cultural milieu and issues facing community members. They work at the level of social determinants of health and focus on mitigating and preventing health issues. This community-engaged research focuses on the Richmond/Henrico Health District Community Health Worker program, which has CHWs working in eight low-income public housing communities.=The partnership began in 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
